It's everything. It's obvious but worth repeating that your profile photos should be clear and centered, vibrant and the epitome of you in one image. According to New York Times bestselling author and dating expert Matthew Hussey , you want to "make sure your first photo is a close-up.
Depending on some apps or devices, you may not even know you've been cropped out of a frame. Other times, you may not realize which photo is even being presented as your first in your profile. Seeing half of someone's face or cut-off body is a bummer -— you can do better.
For selfies, don't forget the basics: good, crisp light from the front and get that high angle. Max out photos in your profile Show off as much of you as you are allowed. If a person really likes what they see, they hope the next photo will reveal more of your personality.
Not all sites and apps have this sort of limit, but for those that do, post a variety of images of yourself and make sure each photo is very different from the others. Post where you've been and what you like to do; show that you can dress up and show you can dress down. Hussey's take here is to "use several photos of you in different situations" rather than a selection of selfies, to vary things up.
Upload as many images as the app or site will allow. Do not post group photos No one cares about your friends. You're match-making -- your profile should be all about you. The endless switching back and forth through photos before and after a group photo trying to figure out who in the picture matches the profile, it's a senseless task no one should be subjected to.
What's worse, you don't want to be the one that someone doesn't find the most attractive in a group photo. If you're wanting to signal to potential suitors what kind of company you surround yourself with, that really comes later -- your goal right now is to match and spark a conversation, and eventually an IRL meeting. Write just enough about yourself Your life story does not belong here. In truth, dating profiles should be an immediate snapshot of who you are and what you're doing with your life right now.
Where you came from, literally speaking, like your hometown or state or country, can be included, but that's it. Your journey to how you became the awesome person that you are today belongs to conversation for later dates hopefully. While you want to fill out as much as possible to let people know as much about you, don't write a novel. Be pithy, be witty and most of all, don't overthink it. Leave some room for the other to inquire and spark genuine interest with you.
Be up-front Is this a fling or are we a thing? Make up your mind going into it with what you are wanting out of dating online. And it's okay to say, you don't know what you're looking for; saying you're open for whatever comes your way is honest and up-front just the same. One of the worst things ever is to match and have great conversation, only to find out you have two very conflicting priorities. Don't waste your time matching for the wrong reasons. Being up-front also comes with a caveat, Hussey adds.
This all works to your benefit, especially coming off of a breakup. So, dating apps: Some are more known as hook-up sites, whereas others are more geared towards people looking for a relationship. Do a little homework about the sites you're on by asking other single friends or good old Google , to make sure they cater to the type of relationship you are looking for. Once you determine you are working with legit relationship-oriented sites, it's time to hone your profile skills.
Here is what I recommend for setting up your dating profile and finding success with online dating. A new dating profile trend is actually listing your viral or antibody status. Much like a guy advertising in his bio that he's completely clean of STDs, this information coming from a stranger probably shouldn't be trusted.
Plus, not only is the accuracy of antibody tests still under question, but a positive COVID test result isn't always a guarantee. So while I don't recommend sharing viral status info, I would recommend sharing your quarantine status.
You want to find someone who is on the same page as you — and is prepared for a long drawn out courtship before there might be any physical contact or even a distanced date. Sharing this information will help to keep expectations in line and also screen for compatibility. Dating apps are a highly visual medium for dating where decisions happen quickly. Having the right number of quality photos between three and five that are eye-catching and attract the kind of partner you are hoping to find are key.
So, what does that leave? Focus on shots that show off your interests. For example, if you are a runner, include one of you crossing the finish line. Not only will this attract potential partners with similar interests, but it also gives suitors an easy conversation starter. Even the most experienced and active daters are a little nervous the first time they reach out to someone. Make it easy. Give lots of easy conversation starters in your profile. The words you use reveal a lot about who you are and can serve as door openers.
Use them wisely. You can also use your dating profile to ask an ice-breaker. On dating apps and sites, people are looking to keep it light and fun, even in a pandemic. This is not the time or the place to bare your soul. Keep text short and light and get straight to the point. A divorced male friend of mine once wrote a dating profile that basically described what went wrong in his marriage. Learn from his mistake and keep talk of exes out of your profile. Be positive and create a visual.
This is the time to really showcase your personality. Instead of saying you're adventurous, share about the time you jumped out of a plane. Bonus points for corresponding photos. Are you looking for a hookup? Let it be known, I do not recommend this in a pandemic A long-term relationship? A husband? State what you want.
Some women worry about sounding desperate, but you can state these goals without sounding needy. The right man who is ready for those things is going to respond well to them. Make sure that your photos are aligned with your romantic goals. Even if you look hot, this might be a turn-off to a man who is looking to settle down. My advice with dating apps is to cast a wide net and then develop the savvy to weed through interested parties and screen for compatibility.
But as far as dating profiles go…. A mix of seriousness added in would make these profiles perfect! These guys have revealed very little about who they are, in a sense. I bet they would be worth meeting! I know the post was a bit long because of the examples so I think you may have skipped several awesome profiles. You say these profiles reveal very little about themselves. I see a bit of mystery as a good thing, no a great thing. What more do you think they should reveal?
You also seem to be implying that if a guy is a serial killer or a bank robber that he is going to list it in his profile. Guys know women are extremely judgemental creatures and will judge everything and anything about a guys profile. We keep ourselves a mystery partly because women like that and partly because we are afraid we might say something about ourselves that will make a woman judge us and never even wish to meet us.
One caveat to this though Dustin is that too many guys are complete pushover pleasers and are scared to mention even the main things they find most important for fear of running off a girl. When I stopped trying to please everyone and learned to communicate my main needs without worrying about who I was going to push away, I started attracting the type of women that I really fit with. Another issue with playing it safe and trying to cast a wide net is that you force the girl to switch her screening process over to depend more heavily on superficial things like looks, height etc.
I definitely agree with you to keep things mysterious but think getting some core things down are better than being super generic. Not sure how other dating sites do it though. Dustin and Mike are spot on. Best to keep things brief. Great profiles! I find most men on match to have redundant and boring profiles, which may or or may not be an indicator of what they will be like in person. Which site are these guys on?
Lol and why did you remove the 2 top secret profiles? Howdy Sara. Most men DO have boring profiles. What happened to the Top Secret profiles? I find the opposite is true Tony. Women are very attracted to intelligence. What makes you think that? There are many types of intelligence.
Was I being a smart ass? Did I really listen? Did I make them feel stupid with my lack of tactfulness? Can you give some tips or examples, how to have a good profile intro? Howdy Marcel — I added a ton of new examples to the Academy Course. I have to keep some things for the Academy Members. I posted two profiles with virtually identical, non-descript headlines, listing all the things that had happened to me online turned into quite a psycho-rant before it was axed!
Whilst I got some comments with my own picture complaining how harsh I was being…. So your saying a male model got more emails than you did with the same profile. Uhhh — Not sure what you proved there other than male models attract women……. How about I do a free in-depth video profile critique for you as long as I can show it on my site. I tried to help him but no dice. I would totally take that challenge.
I loved this article!! Now, can you create the same but for women?? Pretty please wish sugar on top?? Then, yesterday, I read this really great profile. Cute guy and everything. Please know a few things: 1 Guys definitely need your help. Not really any responses but much more interest. Again thank you for your advice. Online dating is very intimidating but a useful tool especially when someone like myself find it difficult to say these things in person but much easier and more relaxing with a little buffer.
Much appreciated!! Your hard work surely has paid off. I sent you an email Aaron. Dear Radio, You are hilarious! Thanks for stepping up to your true calling. BTW — Is that a hint of Texan in your voice? God, I just want to pour acid in my eyes every time i see it….!!!! Shit Rob! They are the ones in the dead center of the Mediocrity Bell Curve.
I can understand how some of these profiles worked and also tell its for the men in there thirties and up what about guys that are younger in college and in their twenties? As a guy I felt my profile was different and creative but I still need more tweaked on it. A lot of them are very similar. Its hard these days to see a man who listens, cares, and keep to promises. I wish i had someone to share some of my life experiences with.. You hit the nail on the head…I am finding it very difficult to find a man that will reciprocate.
I love men. I want one man in my life for all of those crazy, fun, important reasons. I have had no luck with a man wanting to give as much as he gets. Enjoyed the profile reads immensely! Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for all the advice here.
It was a pleasure to read. I am curious, do you find that these slightly longer profile bios work better than a short one? Lots of people say shorter is better, but as a girl looking at one, I want more than just a picture, personally. Most Popular.
